form

Form:

Form is a three dimensional shape, such as a cube, sphere or cone.
Sculpture and 3D design are about creating forms.

In 2D artworks, tone and perspective can be used to create an illusion of form.

(AO:1.  You must ensure that several of the visual ideas/inspirations within the image bank are pursued. )

AO1: Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.

AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.

AO2Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.

AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.

Artist Research:Edward Weston

Edward Weston was a 20th century American Photographer who is known as "one of the most innovative and influential American photographers." He photographs many different subjects such as Landscapes, Still lives, Nudes and Portraits. Weston became ill and dies in the 1950's but his work is still influential today.

Contact Sheet:

Some of my photographs didn't come out as anticipated due to the bad camera angles. I did not use a tripod and so therefore the angles were not straight and I captured more of the background than intended. An example of a photograph like this is 0924. On the other hand, some photos such as 0917 have a good result and will be a picture that i develop. The form of the flowers related to Weston's theme and the inspiration will show more once my photos are edited.

Best Images:

My camera settings were an ISO of 4, an aperture of f//4 and a shutter speed 1/250".  Due to the fact that I was using natural light, these were the settings that should have captured the best shots of the form of the plants. If I were to reshoot these photographs i may alter the aperture to emphasise the form even more.

Images I Should Improve:

The reason that I don't think that these images were as successful is because the form of the flowers is not emphasised in the photographs. This is either because the lighting wasn't intense enough or there was too many flowers in the frame. Also, in some of them, the lens is too zoomed out meaning that more of the background was in the photograph than I wanted.

To improve these photographs I should arrange the flowers in better ways that highlight the forms of each individual one, as well as changing the lighting to be more intense and perhaps using a tripod to improve the framing of my images.

Editing Processes:

Final Outcomes:

Final Analysis:

Overall, I think that my final pieces successfully represent the styles of Weston and relate sharply to the subject of form. With a heavy editing process, these images have been transformed and manipulated to represent the research complete and give a vintage vibe back to Weston's era. If I were to do this shoot again i may improve the setup of my camera, i.e. use a tripod, or change the lighting to highlight the form even more intensely. As all of the edits are very similar, I could vary the style by keeping colour and adjusting it in Photoshop to add some variation. I could also investigate further and focus on portraiture instead of flowers as faces hold an interesting form. As for camera settings, I wouldn't adjust them because they let in the right amount of light for capturing the variety of forms in the plants. In conclusion, this series of photographs were successful. The camera settings worked with the harsh natural light used to create shadows. I decided to capture shadows as they outline the form of an object, making it easier to comprehend.I used a fast shutter speed of 1/250" and an aperture of F//4.
